The thirteenth edition of the Italian Statistics Day (Giornata Italiana della Statistica – GIS), promoted by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and the Italian Statistical Society (SIS), is celebrated on Friday, 20 October, 2023, on the occasion of StatisticAll, the Festival of Statistics and Demography taking place in Treviso.

The initiative coincides with the European Statistics Day, promoted by Eurostat and the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC), which launches the slogan “Statistics for better development in a fast-changing world,” emphasizing how Statistics can positively contribute to improving a rapidly changing Society.

GIS 2023, as in past years, is confirmed as an opportunity to enhance the work that is being carried out to increase confidence in official statistics. Statistical dissemination initiatives and projects, aimed at making the approach to quantitative information easier for everyone, are promoted with several activities on institutional communication channels at the national level and through local meetings.

Initiatives promoted by Istat

At the national level, the Day is celebrated with the StatisticAll Festival of Statistics and Demography on 20 October in Treviso, with a full program of events, including two ones that delve into the theme of statistics professions:

At the local level, the theme of the Festival is taken up and deepened: “Possible Measures for a World Out of Measure. Statistics, Data and … Facts,” with a rich array of appointments in local institutions,  also developing the theme of the Bes at local level (“BesT” – Measurement of Well-Being at local level)

The European theme of 2023European Year of Skills”, set by the European Commission for the European Statistical System, is promoted.

Winners of the national phase will be eligible to take part in the European statistical competition (ESC), the European phase. In the last edition of ESC, Italian students (ages 14-16) took the second place.

Registration closes on 18 December, 2023.
