Istat disseminates estimates of pollution load of urban waste water due to biodegradable load produced by domestic and economic activities for the year 2009.

These estimates are based on the calculation of total urban population equivalent (Tupe) and total population equivalent (Tpe).

The ‘population equivalent’ notion is used to estimate the organic biodegradable load poured into waste water having a five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) of 60g of oxygen per day.

This value corresponds to the average amount of substances introduced into waste water by a permanently resident inhabitant as defined by current legislation on water pollution protection and treatment (Council Directive 91/271/EEC of 21 May 1991 concerning urban waste-water treatment).

The need for quantifying pollution load of urban waste water meets the requirements expressed by the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea and from the Department for Development and Cohesion Policies of the Ministry for Economic Development aiming at establishing the need for treatment of waste water produced by different pollution sources.

The proposed estimates are calculated by taking into account potential load generated on the territory by different pollutant sources according to the “Note on methodology”.

In the attached tables data are aggregated at municipal, regional and Ote (optimal territorial environment) level, as updated to 31 December 2007.
