As of December 31, 2016 Italy had 60,589,445 inhabitants, more than 5 million of whom had foreign citizenship: 8.3% at national level, 10.6% in Central-northern regions.<\/p>\n
The decrease in the number of inhabitants was still going on: the overall balance showed an important drop \u00a0\u00a0(-76,106 units). The reduction applied to the people with Italian citizenship: -96,981 residents, while the foreign population increased slightly, +20,875. Moreover, the female component of foreign population for the first time decreased (-1,767 units).<\/p>\n
The natural population change (births minus deaths) was negative by almost -142 thousand units. As the balance was positive for foreign nationals (almost +63 thousand units), for the Italian ones the decline was even more significant (-204,675 units).<\/p>\n
The decrease in the number of births that started in 2008 was still going on. In 2016 children born were less than half a million, just over 69,000 of which were foreign (14.7% of the total). Compared to 2015, there was an overall reduction of 12,000 units (2,700 for the foreigners).<\/p>\n
The deaths were over 615,000, almost 32,000 less than in 2015. The decrease in 2016 was due to a high level of mortality registered in the previous year.<\/p>\n
In 2016 the international migratory movement determined a positive balance of approximately 144,000 units, a stable value compared to previous years.<\/p>\n
Registrations from abroad increased: they were 300,823 (+7.4% over 2015), \u00a087.4% of which involved a foreign citizen. On the other hand, cancellations for emigration increased (+ 6.9%): for Italians (by birth and by naturalization) they were 114,512 units, for foreigners they were 42,553.<\/p>\n
The attractiveness of the northern and central regions to which were addressed most migration flows (both internal and from foreign countries) was confirmed.<\/p>\n
The trend in the number of the acquisition of Italian citizenship was still upward: in 2016 there were \u00a0201,501 new Italian citizens.<\/p>\n
The different nationalities of foreigners residing in Italy are about 200. Over 50% of foreign residents (more than 2.6 million individuals) are nationals of a European country. The most represented nationality is the Romanian (23.2%), followed by the Albanian (8.9%).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
