These figures confirm the recovery that began in the \nsecond half of the 90s (after 30 years of decline): 1995 was the year of minimum in the number \nof births (526,064).\nParticular attention should therefore be paid to the continuous increase in age of mothers at childbearing: 5.7% of newborn babies have a mother aged at least 40 (an increase from 12,383 births in 1995 to 32,578 in 2008), while there is an on-going reduction in the number of births to mothers below the age of 25 (slightly more than 64,000 in 2008 or 11.1% of total). \nThe percentage of births to unmarried parents has more than doubled: from 8.1% in 1995 to \n19.6% in 2008 (over 102,000 births). \nBirths to foreign couples continue to rise, reaching more than 72,000 in 2008 and equivalent to \n12.6% of total births. This proportion increases  to 16.7% when taking into account  births to \nmixed-nationality couples.
