In line with international conventions and recommendations ISTAT collects data from several sources including administrative sources, with the aim to provide information on violence against women as complete as possible. Due to the under-reporting of offences, statistics collected by the judicial systems and the police forces don’t allow to correctly represent the scale and the characteristics of the phenomenon, however they describe the typology of crimes acknowledged by these authorities.
Only a small proportion of crimes are reported to the law enforcement agencies and additionally statistics supplied by the judicial systems and the police forces lack information on the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator of the crime. This is a substantial limitation in identifying gender based violence.
