With regard to data quality, Istat has adopted the Eurostat quality definition which identifies the following main attributes (or quality components): relevance, accuracy, timeliness and punctuality, accessibility and clarity, consistency and comparability.

Eurostat has also established guidelines for measuring the quality of both statistical products and processes in accordance to quality components. Moreover, it has provided information on how to produce quality reports to inform data users (ESS Handbook for Quality Reports).

Recently, a rich set of selected ESS practices have been developed for the harmonisation of methodologies and techniques used in the European Statistical System.

The European Statistics Code of Practice represents a broader framework for quality encompassing institutional aspects, statistical processes and statistical products.
