“Trips and holidays” is a focus included into the Households Budget Survey to collect information on tourist flows of residents. It provides a wide set of information on tourist trips, such as the amount and the characteristics of trips made for personal and business reasons, both in Italy and abroad, the amount of expenditure, the reasons for not participating in tourism, the amount of same-day visits. The survey provides a set of harmonized estimates across all member states of the European Union, which allows to analyze the evolution of the tourist behavior of individuals. Collecting data on tourism is an activity foreseen by the Italian National Programme of Statistics, which includes the whole set of compulsory surveys to be carried out in the Country. Moreover, the survey is conducted in accordance with the European Regulation 692/2011 (repealing from 1 January 2012 the European Directive 95/57/EC), and the revisions adopted by the Commission Delegated Regulation (Eu) 2019/1681 of 1 August 2019 amending Regulation (EU) No 692/2011.

The survey is continuous, conducted monthly, and it allows catching the seasonality of the tourist phenomena. The households are sampled through a random extraction from Municipalities’ registry office.

The interview is conducted with CAPI technique (Computer Assisted Personal Interview). Trips and same-day visits done by every member of the household in the reference period are collected.
