Investments on environmental protection for industry

In 2014 investments for environmental protection of industrial companies decreased for the second year in a row, with a decline of 19.7 % compared to the previous year. This compares to a 6.5 % increase of total gross fixed investment. The decline was very significant for small and medium-sized businesses (-41.6%) and lower for large ones (-9.2%).

It is estimated that over 1,1 billion euros were invested in environmental protection. The expenditure was incurred for the three quarters by large companies (250+ employees) that invested 853 million euros compared with 264 million euros of small and medium sized enterprises. On average 294 euros for each employee were invested.

Investments were mainly oriented towards end-of-pipe type equipment and installations (793 million euros, -17.2% over 2013) the expenditure for installations and equipment integrated technology was lower (324 million euros), it fell by more than a quarter compared to the previous year (-25.2%).

The total GFCF by industrial enterprises for environmental protection accounted for 3.2%, the share decreased to 2.0% in manufacturing, a decline compared to 2013 (2.9%).

More than one third of the expenditure (37.1%) was devoted to the recovery and remediation of soil, groundwater and surface water, noise and vibration abatement, protection of the landscape and radiation protection and to research and development activities aiming at the protection of the environment. The highest expenditure was carried out by the sectors of manufacture of refined petroleum products (20.2%), metal (14.1%).
