In order to familiarise students with statistics, Istat works with schools and universities, arranging encounters with teachers and students and placing instruments for understanding and using statistics at their disposal.
University and work. Career guidance through statistics (in Italian language only) is a booklet which, supported by data and information on how universities operate and the relation between type of degree and employment opportunities, guides secondary school students in choosing a university faculty.
The "2010-2011 Poster Competition", is the international statistics competition sponsored by Istat and the Italian Statistical Society (SIS). Organised by the International Statistical Literacy Competition (ISLP), it aims to increase awareness of statistics among students and teachers throughout the world, to promote statistical literacy resources and to bring together parties interested in statistical literacy in each country.
"Binariodieci", which has been active since 2002, is a space dedicated to secondary school and university students to gain access to statistics by being guided through data and methodologies used at the national and international level. One of the available tools is the volume "Statistica per esempi" (Statistics by Example), which illustrates how statistics are used and information is collected, and explains data through examples from everyday life, such as newspaper readership, football matches, athletics meetings and the value of money.
"Il valore dei dati" (The value of data - available in Italian language only) is a hypertext devised to help less expert users and anyone interested in numbers to make the best use of statistics. It can be used in a systematic way by students and teachers who are interested in learning more about the concrete application of statistics. It is based on materials available on the Istat web and on equivalent documents produced by international institutions and other national institutes of statistics. .
Finally, with the Census at school (in Italian language only), project held in primary and lower secondary schools in 2001, the year of the general censuses of population and of industry and services, statistics came into classrooms with a census exercise devised by Istat and the Società Italiana di Statistica (Italian Statistical Society), by agreement with the Ministry of Education and the Unione Matematica Italiana (Italian Mathematical Union).
