In June 2013, according to provisional estimates, the Italian consumer price index for the whole nation (NIC) increased by 0.3% compared with the previous month and by 1.2% with respect to June 2012 (0.1 higher than in May 2013).

The slight speed up of the Italian inflation was mainly due to the upward impact of Transport (+1.0% on annual basis, from +0.1% observed in the previous month).

The increase on monthly basis of All items index was due in particular to the increases of prices of Food and non-alcoholic beverages, Transport (for both +0.6%) and Recreation and culture (+0.4%).

With regard to Food and non-alcoholic beverages, the main cause was the large increase of Fresh Fruit prices (+6.9% both compared with the previous month and with respect to June 2012).

Concerning Transport, the upward impact effect was mainly due to the increase of prices of Passenger transport by air (+5.7% on monthly basis; +16.1% on annual basis, from +14.2% observed in May) and of Passenger Transport by sea and inland waterway (+13.1% compared with the previous month; -1.9% on annual basis, from -3.0% observed in May), on which seasonal factors had in part an impact. In the same division, Fuels and lubricants also had an upward impact due to an increase with respect to the previous month (+0.7%) that brought to -1.9% the rate of change on annual basis from -5.3% of May 2013.

In June 2013, according to preliminary estimates, the Italian harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) increased by 0.3% compared with the previous month and by 1.4% with respect to June 2012 (0.1 higher than in May 2013).
