Road accidents in Italy

During 2011, the number of road accidents resulting in deaths or injuries in Italy is 205,638, with 3,860 killed (deaths within 30 days) and 292,019 injured persons.

Comparing 2011 data with the previous year (2010), a decrease of 2.7% for accidents, 3.5% for injuries and 5.6% for killed persons is recorded.

Between 2001 and 2011, the percentage decrease of killed persons in road accidents in Italy is 45.6%. During 2010, the same percentage change (2010/2001) was (-42.4%).

During 2011, 157,023 road accidents, 213,001 injured and 1,744 killed persons were counted on the inside urban area roads. Regarding the motorways, the road accidents were 11,007, the injured persons 18,515 and the killed persons 338.  On the other rural roads (motorways excluded), 37,608 road accidents, 65,503 injured and 1,778 killed were recorded.

The mortality index, calculated by means the ratio between deaths and road accidents (per 100), shows that the most dangerous accidents occur on the rural roads (motorways excluded), where 4.7 deaths every 100 road accidents happens. The inside urban area road accidents are less dangerous than the others (1.1 deaths per 100 accidents). For the motorways, the index is equal to 3.1 (per 100).

During all the day time since 9 p.m in the evening to 7 a.m. in the morning, the mortality index is higher than the daily average (1.9 deaths per 100 accidents), with a peak at 5 a.m o’clock in the morning (6.0 deaths per 100 accidents). The day week with the highest mortality index level is Sunday (2.8 deaths per 100 accidents).

Concerning the night-time (between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.), the highest mortality index level is reached on Sunday night (3.8 deaths per 100 accidents) and Friday and Saturday night (3.6 and 3.5 deaths per 100 accidents).

The drivers dead in road accidents represents the 69.7% out of total deaths, passengers and pedestrians correspond, in that order, to 15.3% and 15.1%. Among drivers deceased in road accidents (2,690 in total), people between 20 and 39 years old are at a disadvantage, compared to the other ages. Deaths are mainly for young people in the age classes 20-24 and adults 35-39 years old (263 deaths and 275 deaths).

Cars represent the vehicle category mainly involved in road accidents (66.1%), motorcycles represent the 14.0% out of total vehicles involved, moped 5.4% and bicycles 4.5%.
