During 2015, the number of people immigrated to Italy was about 280,000, substantially unchanged compared to 2014. The immigrants with a foreign citizenships were the majority by far (250,000, equal to 89%)

The largest number of immigrants was recorded for Romanian (46 thousand), followed by Moroccan (15,000), Chinese (15,000), Compared to 2014 the immigration of Philippians (-35%), Peruvian (-31%), Moldavian (-23%) to Italy was on the decrease. The Gambian, Malian and Nigerian immigrants showed the highest percentage increases (+209%, +135% and +68% respectively).

During 2015, 147,000 people left the Country, 8% higher than those recorded on 2014 (136,000). The rise of emigration along with the data reported for immigration, drove to a positive (+133,000) and decreasing net migration (-6% compared to 2014)

The increase in emigration is only due to the rise in the number of national emigrants (from 89,000 in 2014 to 102,000 in 2015). In the same year, the number of foreign emigrants showed a decrease from 47,000 to 45,000.

An analysis by next residence reveals that United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland and France reported the largest share of emigrants from Italy in 2015.

Among Nationals, 23,000 emigrants with more than 24 years of age held a degree (about 31%). This percentage showed a sharp increase compared to 2014 (+13%). Emigrants with a medium-low educational level were also on the rise (+9%).

The National foreign born  emigrants were more than 23,000: the majority (55%) decided to go back to their country of birth; as for the emigrates that didn’t choose as a destination their country of birth, 37% emigrated within the European Union and the remaining 8% went to a country which is not a EU Member States.

During 2015, 1 million and 284,000 people changed their residence among Italian Municipalities (-2% compared to 2014).

The large majority (971,000 people) of the changes of the residence took place within the same region, while 313,000 people chose a different region of residence.

The number of foreign citizens that migrated within the Country was 202,000 in 2015, -37,000 compared to 2014.
