Business demography

In 2012 there were about 275,000 business births, approximately 10,700 companies in more than the previous year. The birth rate is 7.0%, +0.3 percentage points compared to 2011.

Compared to 2011, an increase in the birth rate affects businesses of all macro-sectors.

More marked was the increase in Construction and in the Other Services sectors (0.4). On the other hand, in the Manufacturing and Trade sectors, the increase in the birth rate is lower (passing, respectively, from 4.9 to 5.0% and from 6.3 to 6.5%).

Central and South and Islands are the areas with the highest birth rates (7.5% and 8.4% respectively), while North-west and North-east birth rates are below the national average. As in 2011, also in 2012, the birth rate of businesses without employees grows, while the birth rate of those with employees decreases.

The overall business death rate is unchanged compared to 2011 (8%).

The death rate is a slight decrease in the sectors of Construction and Trade (respectively -0.2 and -0.1 percentage points), while for the Manufacturing and Other services sectors there is an increase of 0.2 percentage points.

For the fifth year in a row, the turnover net rate has a negative value (-1% compared to -1.3 in 2011). In detail, the Construction sector has the highest negative value (-3.0%). The Other Services sector, which  recorded a negative turnover in 2010 (-0.2%), was the only one with a net turnover equal to zero.

In 2012, the percentage of businesses survival after one year decreases. In fact 81.1% of businesses born in the previous year is still working, while in 2011 the survival rate was 83.1%.

In the sector of Trade there is the highest decline in the survival rate at one year (from 84.4% to 81.1%).

After, Other Services (from 82.7% to 80.8%), Manufacturing (from 88.4 to 86.9%) and Construction (from 79.9% to 79.0%).

The average size of enterprises established in 2010 and still active after two years increased between 2010 and 2012, from 1.4 to 2.3 average employees. These enterprises employ about 438 thousand people, compared to 374 000 the year of birth; the increase in employment is therefore equal to 17%.

All macro-economic activities show a gain in employment compared to the year of birth, ranging from 1.6% of the Construction, to 50.8% of Manufacturing.
